Hafodyrynys
H
afodyrynys RFC is a terrific example of what can be achieved with a strong set up behind the scenes as they continue
to make progress. Rugby Club Magazine caught up with their Chairman Phil Connett to find out more about the
good work they’ve been doing lately.
He told us, “I’ve been with the club since around 1980
and have played 300 plus games for the team. At one
point in time I was the Chairman and Club Captain
before retiring in 1996.
“The mood is good at the club at the moment. We’ve
turned it around this season after going through a
little turmoil the previous couple of seasons when
we lost a lot of players. That happens in our area and
we’ve had to rebuild. We finished third in the league
and relatively speaking we’re happy with how it has
gone and are looking to use that as a springboard for
next season.
“We’ve invested somewhere in the region of £150,000
of our own money on improving the facilities that we
have here so the set up that we’ve got here is very good
now. The members here are fantastic and their work
in this area is helping to create a club to be proud of.
“We’ve got several junior teams which was part
of the criteria that the WRU had insisted on around
about five years ago when we first applied for WRU
status. It’s been very difficult but we started a couple
of sides and have built from there. There are about
120 kids involved at the moment and it is going really
well.
“Getting that part of the club set up right is one of
the best things that could have happened to us really
and it’s enabling us to play an important role in the
community now. We’ve just been given WRU Status
Phil Wysom is a club sponsor of Hafodyrynys RFC. He recently
told Rugby Club Magazine, “My connection with the club is
through my next door neighbour Paul Baker, I have been so
impressed by the effort and work those guys put into the club
whilst balancing their lives, that when Paul asked if I would like to
sponsor the club I had to say yes.
My input is the easy part where I have a board at the club and
do a little sponsorship whereas the club committee and everyone
else are working tirelessly to build up their club in our local
community. It’s great to see the club having such a good year and
in particular the achievement of gaining WRU status. Best wishes
to everyone at Hafodyrynys RFC and good luck for next season.”
