It is important to keep in contact with the lads whilst recruitment also plays an important part. We are recruiting a strength and conditioner at the moment and trying to help with the commercial side of the business in terms of player sponsorship etc.” Challenges “Regional rugby is still in its infancy and we are still getting to grips with Swansea’s role as part of the new structure. There have been some teething problems on the way and in recent years Swansea has almost sacrificed its own success in order to develop players. I believe the role of the Premiership in terms of the wider pathway is unclear, I’m not sure if it is there to develop players or be the next best level below regional rugby? If it is to develop talent why are there no incentives to do this? As such we are trying to develop a five year plan for the club with no real idea of what the landscape will be during that time, this is a huge challenge.” Ambitions “Our ambition is to bring back success to the club whilst continuing to develop the next generation of talent. Ultimately what this means is to get promoted back into the Welsh Premiership and be competing at the top of the table in 5 years’ time whilst still developing players at the same rate as we are now. This is both on and off the pitch and with management as well. Too often in rugby we only look at the short term but we are trying to implement systems for continuity and development of coaches, committee and players alike. We are all in a very privileged position in our caretaker positions within Swansea and there is pressure and a responsibility on all at the club to restore Swansea to its rightful place in Welsh Rugby.” www.swansearfc.co.uk - Twitter : @swansearfc www.sportip.biz 93
