drifters FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Drifters D rifters RFC is based at the Farnham Common Sports Club on One Pin Lane in Buckinghamshire and their first team currently competes in the Southern Counties North League. They are led by the team of President Peter Southerden and Chair Pauline Gregory and the club is looking to progress under their guidance. It would be fair to say that their first team did not perhaps enjoy the campaign they would have liked this time around as they put together a record of eight wins and fourteen defeats from their 22 matches. This saw them finish in the bottom half of the table with 44 points on the board. There were plenty of positives for the team to take from the season and these should provide them with a solid platform from which to build for the future. So long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they should be in with a good chance of pushing on up the table next time around. Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with Club representative Paul Nichols to find out a little more about the club and his involvement. He told us, “I first joined Drifters in 1989 after I had moved from the North East, a 70 Issue 55 friend introduced me and I loved the way all the guys bonded. “I was lucky that I was able to play with some great players who taught me the basics of many positions prolonging the time I could play. I have made friendships that will last a lifetime and had so many good times that I have an abundance of great memories. “There are so many great memories from my time here but our promotions and cup successes were up there along with every tour I have been on but my wife will probably want me to say holding my wedding reception at the club! “Considering the injuries we had throughout all 3 teams we managed to hold our own so I would think it was a good result in the circumstances. Hopefully over the coming years we can gain at least one promotion and maybe with me retiring from playing to enjoy a few beers on the sidelines!” This is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section either and this is reflected by the fact that they also have a number of youth sides in place. These teams look to provide youngsters from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how they are able to progress over the coming years. Drifters RFC is a terrific example of a well-run community establishment that appears to have everything in place to enable them to look forwards to a bright and successful future. Rugby Club Magazine wishes them the best of luck.
