Cranbrook
C
ranbrook Rugby Football Club was first established by B.L. Jaeger who was a schoolmaster that set up a team to
play on the pitch now known as ‘Jaeger’s’ in 1936. The team was known as The Falcons which was believed to come
around from a label inside someone’s hat!
At present they play their home games at the Tomlin Ground
on Angley Road in Kent and their first team competes in the
Shepherd Neame Kent 1 League. They are led by the team
of President Mike McMinnies and Chairman Peter
Jovanovic and the club has made a considerable
amount of progress under their guidance.
This season their first team has put together
a fantastic campaign, compiling a record of
eighteen wins, two draws and just two defeats
from their 22 matches. This saw them finish
ten points clear of their nearest rivals to be
crowned Champions and clinch promotion.
They have every right to be proud of their
achievements this time around and will
now be keen to push on and be successful
again next time around. As long as they can
keep their current group of players together
they should be in with a good chance of
doing just that.
Cranbrook’s success was not limited solely
to the league format of the game as they also
made it to the final of the Kent Vase. Here they
took on Beccehamian and a late try from Josh
Honey saw them clinch the cup for a second year
running and complete a memorable double in the
process.
One of the highlights of the team’s performances
was the attacking brand of rugby that they managed to
produce which was reflected in the fact that they racked up
750 points in the league alone at a rate of nearly 35 per game.
Unsurprisingly this saw them finish as the top scorers in the
competition.
This is not a club that focuses solely upon their senior section
however and they also have a number of youth sides running.
These teams look to provide youngsters from the local area
with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable
environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential.
It is important for any club looking to be successful over a
sustained period of time to be able to produce their own talent
and this is an area that Cranbrook appears to have covered. It
will certainly be exciting to see how they can progress over the
coming years.

In order to help their young players to make the sometimes
difficult transition into the senior game they also have a number
of additional sides in place. This allows them to gain experience
of adult level rugby even if they are not yet considered ready
for first team action which can be an important step in the
development process.
Cranbrook’s recent success is a reflection of all the hard work
that has gone into the club behind the scenes and Rugby Club
Magazine would like to take this opportunity to congratulate
them on a terrific season.
