uke Collings has been a part of Buckfastleigh
Ramblers for over 20 years. Having played
over 300 games he is an integral part of the
team and as Chairman of the club he keeps
the club running smoothly and maintains
the good family atmosphere that it is known for. He
is very passionate about the club, fully committed and
goes above and beyond his call of duty.
Prop Luke joined Ramblers at the age of 17 because it
was his local club and followed in the footsteps of his
scrum-half brother Adrian. (Adrian was sadly killed in a
motorbike accident in 1999)
As Chairman he says the worst part is dealing with
‘club politics’ and trying to please everyone all the time.
But the good far outweighs the bad. Seeing the team
perform every week makes it all worthwhile along with
watching the new young lads come in and buy in to the
whole Ramblers ethos, also the community supporting
the club.
The general mood at the club right now is very much
like when Luke first joined, the whole club, players, coaches,
managers and supporters come together each week, win, lose
or draw spirits remain high. We have had a lot of youngsters
join this season and they remain committed for the new season
along with our two coaches Tony Wolke and James Hyne who
are continuing where they left off, keeping up moral and training
going throughout the break.
Last season was very tempestuous, starting very well and
hopeful, but disruption within the club and losing a couple
coaches found mid-season on a low, but once things settled and
the lads stuck with it the season ended on a high with morale
being the best it has been for some years. Finishing 6th in Tribute
Devon 2 league.
The club is now working alongside the RFU to go in to the
local school to encourage more youth rugby, and our aim is to
eventually form a colt side.
