M
achen RFC is a fine example of a well-run village establishment which has retained its admirable amateur ethos
over the years. Club Secretary Samuel Moore took the time us more about the club and how they have been
getting along recently.
He told us, “I was introduced to the club by a friend,
David Wright, 27 years ago. His brother Jon is one of our
senior coaches. The most challenging aspect is keeping on
top of things. Fortunately I have a good team of people
around me to whom I can delegate. The most rewarding
aspect is still being involved now that my playing days
are over.
“The club is very upbeat. The senior squad are a great
bunch and we have just returned from a brilliant tour to
Hannover , Germany. Team spirit is superb. The youth
are in the District Plate Final and came through their first
season in the Premier Division with credit. We have 3
players in the Wales U16 squad and our junior and mini
sections are going from strength to strength.
“The 1st XV finished 4th in the league, but one more
try in the penultimate game would have catapulted them
into 2nd place. The boys are disappointed and feel they
slightly under achieved. We will be going all-out for
promotion next year. Our young youth team have done
well and have a very good team spirit. We have a large
junior and mini section with a dedicated team of workers
keeping them progressing.
“We have a couple of work days planned to tidy-up the
surroundings of the club and paint the posts etc. The main
project for the summer will be to contact all the players
and make sure that everyone is happy and available for
next year along with recruitment.
“We run a junior and mini section in the hope that they
will stay to form a youth team. From that youth team we
always hope that four or five players each year will push
through to senior rugby. The youth are the future of the
club and it is vital that we maintain the section
