Since first being established they have always worked hard to build a close bond with the town and continue to do so to this day. Competing in the First Utility Super League, they have won four of their twelve matches played to date in 2015. Backed by their loyal fan base their home form has been crucial with all of their victories coming at the Select Security Stadium and they will be keen to build on this over the coming months. Magic Weekend With the season well underway we are now approaching this seasons Magic Weekend with all twelve First Utility Super League teams set to make the journey to St James’ Park, Newcastle for a terrific weekends action on Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31. The event will see three matches played each day supported by an extraordinary package of fun and activities to entertain the whole family. Widnes will be kicking off the spectacle as they take on Salford Red Devils. At present, the two sides are separated by just two points and so coming away with a victory will be vital for The Vikings if they are to climb the table. Men United The Widnes Vikings’ Official Charity Partner for 2015 is Prostate Cancer UK who’s ever growing Men United movement has led to more than 200,000 people pledging their support of the Charity. Fans of Widnes Vikings can join Men United, do something great with their mates to help beat prostate cancer, and have the chance to win a pair of Magic Weekend Day Passes at St James’ Park this May. By completing a simple survey fans can show their knowledge at the start of the partnership, and share their friendship stories in tandem with the club’s new campaign promoting mates getting together to do something great to beat prostate cancer. Speaking to www.widnesvikings.co.uk after the partnership had been announced for the new season, Brian O’Connor, Club Director at the Vikings, said: “We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to play our part in the Men United campaign and support the great work being done by Prostate Cancer UK.” 8 Issue 54 The Academy One of the standout features of the Widnes Vikings set up is their Academy and this was highlighted recently with no fewer than five of their players being selected in the England programme. Ryan Ince, Brad Walker, Owen Farnworth, Liam Walsh and Danny Walker all received call ups which represents a tremendous success for the players and the club. Head of Youth Performance, Phil Finney commented, “As a club we would like to acknowledge the great efforts made by parents, community coaches and teachers in helping these players to achieve this recognition. Without their support there is no doubt that these boys would not have made the progress they have.” With the superb academy that Widnes Vikings has in place the future on the field promises to be bright for the club. Perhaps more importantly though they will continue the outstanding work they do off the field using rugby as a tool to aid the entire community.
