beddau Beddau Article provided by Club President Tony Goold T he village of Beddau had a rugby team before the Second World War. However it was in 1951 that a new team was formed which played in the junior district union. Fifty years ago, in 1965, we gained WRU status and shocked the rest of the teams in the Mid-District by winning the knock-out cup for 5 consecutive years. In the 1971-72 season the WRU introduced the Welsh Cup for all clubs. We had a great record over the first four years, reaching the last sixteen three times, losing narrowly to Neath, Newbridge and Pontypridd and finally to Aberavon in the quarter finals. At present the general mood in the club is excellent as the first team are top of the league and just required to win our four remaining matches to be in the playoff for a return to the championship. In season 2012-13 the WRU introduced a championship league which we were successful in qualifying for. That season the rugby was a very high standard and we finished mid table with 10 wins. Unfortunately we lost our eight best players, many leaving to join premiership clubs. Consequently we had a very young side last season and lost our final game to be relegated to the new division one east/ central. This season commenced with a convincing home win against Ystrad Rhondda, who are the only team who can prevent us from winning the league on April 25th. Unfortunately our only defeat this season in the league was when we narrowly lost an away game to Gilfach Goch because the referee called passive scrums due to our complete dominance of the scrum. Gary Jones is a club sponsor of Beddau RFC and he recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “My dad William George Jones, nickname Billy Brush, was a great club member. During his time with the club he played prop, was a referee and an active committee member too. I also played for the club many moons ago as full back and have been a sponsor for over 30 years now. Billy and I, of Beddau Aerials, would like to wish everyone associated with Beddau Rugby Club the very best of success for the future.” www.pitchero.com/clubs/beddaurfc - Twitter : @Beddaurfc www.sportip.biz 73
