Basildon
B
asildon RFC was first established in 1955 by an Irish Priest and has put together a history of which they have every
right to be proud since then. One of the most significant events in their history came when they made the move to a
new clubhouse and ground in Gardiners Lane in 1974.
This move was key to the club’s progress and was thanks to the
work of rugby enthusiasts such as Billy Harding, Tony Essex
and Owen Egan. The current group of players will be keen to
add to the side’s history in the coming years and are confident of
achieving plenty of success.
Their first team currently competes in the London 2 North East
League and is based on Gardiners Close, Basildon in Essex. They
are led by the team of Chairman Andy White and Secretary Gary
Santry and the club is looking to progress under their guidance.
This season it would be fair to say that the side did not perhaps
enjoy the campaign that they would have liked as they put
together a record of five wins and seventeen defeats from their
twenty two matches. This saw them finish in the bottom half of
the table with 28 points on the board.
With the season now complete they will now turn their attentions
towards the 2015/16 campaign and ensuring they enjoy a more
successful time. As long as they can retain their current group
of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they
should be able to claim a higher league finish.
Basildon is not a club to focus solely upon their seniors however
and one of the standout features of their set up is a superb youth
section. This part of the club looks to provide youngsters from
the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and
enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full
potential.
It is important for any club to be able to produce their own talent
if they are to be successful over a sustained period of time and
this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly
be exciting to see how their juniors can progress in the coming
years.
In order to help ensure that these players enjoy a smooth
transition into the senior game they also have additional sides
in place. These teams look to provide youngsters from the local
area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable
environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential.
Another benefit of having extra sides is that it allows the first
team to benefit from far greater strength in depth. If they are
ever left short on numbers through injury or work commitments
they have the option of calling players up with a limited amount
of disruption.
The club also has a thriving social section and have hosted a
number of events which have always been enjoyed by everyone
that attends. Their facilities are used regularly and the clubhouse
is busy on training nights and match days which has the potential
to provide a valuable source of additional revenue. They are
committed to playing an important role in the local community
and with this in mind also make their facilities available to hire
for the local community.
There is much to admire about the set up that Basildon RFC
currently has in place thanks to the hard work that their
Committee puts into making them a success. Hopefully they will
be able to continue in the same manner for many years to come.
