Brynmawr
G
o back just over a year and Brynmawr were struggling for players and languishing at the bottom of their league.
Fast forward to the present day and they have put together a terrific campaign and are currently top of their league
with a game left to play. We caught up with their Secretary Robert Kershaw to find out what has been behind the
fantastic turnaround.
He told us, “I have been involved 33 years with the rugby club as
a youth and senior player and am now secretary, fixture secretary
and safe guarding officer. I was first attracted to the club due to my
late father Terry (sadly passed away in March this year from lung
cancer) being an ex-player and my huge passion for rugby.
“The most challenging aspects of my role is the lack of time spent
away from my supportive wife Stephanie as I spend too much time
involved with the running of the club. Due to a lack of volunteers
wanting to help out on the committee, there are a few of us who
have to spread the workload. The most rewarding aspects are
when I get to see the senior and youth team taking to the field on a
Saturday and our U14s on a Sunday.
“There is a very positive mood at the club at the moment. Our senior
team have just recorded a Wales league record score win when they
defeated our neighbours Tredegar RFC 182–7 running in 28 tries
and converting 21. Off the field, after a number of years struggling
we have bucked the trend and the social club is doing well resulting
in the club being refurbished and being used by many different
organisations from the town.
Neil Bartlett is a long term sponsor of Brynmawr Rugby Club
and he recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “I played for Blaenavon,
another local club, but did also turn out as scrum-half on occasion for
Brynmawr when the boys were struggling for players.
Rob Kershaw is Mr. Brynmawr and does a tremendous amount of
work in keeping the club moving and has been an integral part of its
success. I would like to wish everyone associated with the club good
luck and I will always support them. Congratulations on your promotion
this season!”
