greystones Greystones G reystones RFC is based at Dr. Hickey Park on Mill Road in County Wicklow and their first team currently competes in Division 2B of the Ulster Bank League. They are led by the team of Adrian Goodrich and Chairman Gary Nolan and the club has made a considerable amount of progress under their guidance. They were first established in 1937 following a meeting in Carnegie Library which was attended by around twenty people with the intention of forming a club to represent the town. Since then they have put together a history of which they have every right to be proud. One notable individual in their history is Eric Archer who was at the first meeting and has been part of the club ever since. He was able to enjoy their 75th anniversary recently and his commitment to Greystones RFC is to be admired. This season Greystones have generally performed well on the field with their first team putting together a strong record of ten wins and just five defeats in their fifteen league matches. This has left them sitting near the top of the table with fifty points on the board. This should provide the club with the perfect platform from which to build as they head into the off-season. As long as they can retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they should be in with a good chance of doing well again next time around. Greystones RFC is about far more than just putting out a successful first team however and they are fully committed to playing an important role in their local community. They look to provide players of all ages, gender and ability with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. This is reflected by the fact that they have ladies, over 35’s tag, social mixed tag and special needs rugby at the club. In addition to this they also host a number of charity events and fundraisers throughout the year which serves to highlight what an important role they have in their local area, making this a truly special club. One of the standout features is the superb youth section that they have in place with around 600 boys and girls playing for their mini and youth sides. They have produced a number of quality players over the years with many of the current group continuing to gain provincial and international honours. It is important for any club to be able to produce their own talent and this is an area that Greystones appears to have covered with a number of their first team having come through their ranks. It will certainly be exciting to see how their youngsters can progress over the coming years. There is much to admire about the work that Greystones have been carrying out in recent times. Hopefully they will be able to continue in the same manner for many years to come. www.greystonesrfc.ie- Twitter : @GreystonesRFC www.sportip.biz 91
