St Julians
S
t Julians HSOB RFC is a terrific example of a well-run community establishment
that provides people from the local area with an opportunity to enjoy the game in a
safe and enjoyable environment. Senior Club Secretary Mark Spencer took the time
to tell us more about the good work that they’ve been doing lately.
He said, “I have been involved with the
club for 33 years now, approximately 30 of
those being on the committee in one form or
another. I was first attracted to the club after
leaving the army, and after being brought
up in the area and having friends playing
for the club it was a good way of keeping fit
and keeping in touch with old friends
With having over 50 playing members at
the club at present, the mood is at a high,
having a constant of good results, the
atmosphere in the club is high. We have
had one of our better seasons for many
years, after bringing in a new coach at the
end of last season results this season have
improved with us pushing for promotion.
We want to keep improving, with the
benefits of a bigger squad we are able to put
a stable side on the field each week, even
with the injury’s we are carrying at the
moment, w e are still getting results which
are keeping us up at the top end of the table
Our biggest challenges include the need
78 Issue 53
to keep improving and attracting players,
developing the Juniors, keeping them
interested to develop their skill levels to
move into senior rugby when the time
comes. It is our to build a bigger and better
playing base, better facilities to attract
players at all levels and to improve facilities
for the community.”
One of the standout features of the St
Julians set up is the superb youth section
that they run and we caught up with Junior
Chairman Andy Lee to find out more.
He told us, “I've been in involved with the
club since I was 15 years old, so 35 years
now. The first VX would come and play
a fixture with St. Julians Comprehensive
School to attract players to the Old Boys.
The most challenging aspects of my role are
the recruitment of players and new coaches.
The most rewarding is seeing the children’s
and parent's smilling faces every Saturday
at training and Sunday Matches.
I'm the founder of the club's Mini & Junior
