st columba & torpoint FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG St Columba & Torpoint S t Columba and Torpoint RFC play their home games at Defiance Field on Antony Road in Cornwall and their first team currently competes in the Tribute Devon 1 League. They are led by Chairman Chris Goodman who is supported by Secretary Tony Bevan and the club has made a considerable amount of progress under their guidance. They were first established in 1927 with a view to providing young men with Scottish connections with an opportunity to play the game. The club was opened up to players not of Scottish extraction in 1931 as long as they were nominated by members of the side. The name St Columba was chosen due to their association with Scotland with the club’s royal red also coming from the pioneer of Scottish history. Since being set up they have put together a history of which they have every right to be proud and will be keen to add to these successes over the coming years. This season, their first team has put together a strong league campaign, having compiled a record of ten wins and just five defeats from their first fifteen matches. This has left them sitting near the top of the table with 45 points on the board. This should provide them with the perfect platform from which to build as they look ahead towards their 2015/16 campaign. So long as they can retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they should be in with a good chance of another successful season. One of the highlights of the team’s performances this season has been the strong defensive record that they have. This has been reflected by the fact that they have conceded just 197 points all season, proving them to be one of the strongest defensive units in the league. This is thanks to the fact that they have some superb individual defenders but also is a testament to the hard work that has been put in on the training ground. Being so sound defensively gives them the potential to win games even when they are not playing at their best. St Columba and Torpoint is not a club focusing solely upon their senior section however as they have been making a considerable effort to improve their youth set up in recent times. This part of the club looks to provide youngsters from the local area with an opportunity to enjoy the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their juniors can develop over the coming years. There is much to admire about the superb set up that St Columba and Torpoint currently has in place and this should enable them to continue to prosper for many years to come. 68 Issue 53 www.pitchero.com/clubs/stcolumbatorpoint Twitter : @StColumbaRFC
