A regular member of the Cornwall team
in recent times has been Redruth’s long
serving second row Damien Cook who has
now won 17 caps with Cornwall. Making
his Redruth debut at Westcombe Park
in 2004, he has now amassed over
250 league games for the ‘Reds’
and a further 10 national
cup appearances. Damien
stated that, “This season
has witnessed a new
coaching regime which
has introduced a new
attractive style of play
which the players have
enjoyed. We have
achieved an improved
league position from
last season and the
mood in the camp is
good.”
In his third season
as club captain, back
row forward Chris Fuca
once again led his team
with pride and passion.
Reflecting on the season he
commented:
“The season of 2014/15 was the
start of a new era for the club, one
where there were many people who care
about what happens on the pitch and most
importantly off the pitch. A group of great
club people striving to put the club back
on the map. As a playing group we have
had total support, for example last year we
drove to games in the morning, to the likes
of Shelford in mini buses. However, this
year it was felt that travelling by coach and
having the occasional over night stay was
worth the expense.
We may not have won a great deal on
the road but we have been a much more
competitive side travelling than in the
past. Our home form as normal has been
outstanding and I think our new style of
play is finally taking shape. It has always
been an honour to be part of this club and
this year, being my third year as Captain,
has been amazing.
Having said that a recent injury
side lined me for 8 weeks where
Sam Parsons stepped in to
captain the club. He may not
be the most vocal of people
but Sam is a player that leads
by example and rarely has
a poor game. We are very
fortunate to have someone
of such quality.
This year we have a new
breed of youngsters that
have refreshed the squad
and pushed the more senior
players and I truly believe
that this current squad can
only get stronger. As with
most seasons, Redruth has
had its ups and downs but the
ups this year really do outweigh
the downs. Finally, I would like to
say this positive outcome is down to
people putting this great club first and
to a set of great players that make huge
sacrifices every week to do their best on the
field for little more than a pint or ten.”
More recently, following the end of the
rugby union campaign, the Recreation
Ground has also become the home of the
Cornish Rebels Rugby League team who
play from May onwards in the South West
Premier League. The Rebels finished top
of the league in 2014/15 and are looking
forward to another successful summer
campaign based at Redruth.
