of the seniors filters down well. We’re fully focused on
completing this potentially historic season at the moment
... we've won nothing yet!”
President Lindsay Kirkwood also took the time to speak
with Rugby Club Magazine, saying, “I joined the club in
its second year, 1971, at the age of 17. The club had been
formed the previous year by Colin Tuckwell, who is now
Secretary of Pontypool, and Vernon Giles. Many of the
early players remain with the club as supporters or as
committee members notably Neil (Wally) Wilkinson
as Chairman, David Bevan who has acted as Fixture
Secretary from the very first season and Nigel Smith who
is now Head Coach.
“The sheer fun and camaraderie combined with the
rate of progress on the pitch were a huge attraction and
of course Welsh rugby was experiencing a golden era
at that time so what a time to start a rugby club. I don't
think we really noticed what was going on, it was just
good fun.
“By definition we are a community club that provides the
opportunity for local youngsters to start playing rugby.
Relationships with the local comprehensive school are
extremely positive and most of our players would have
attended there.
“The clubhouse appears to be used increasingly by locals
and plans are afoot to extend the building in the future.
We're a friendly club where camaraderie is paramount.
Friendships are maintained for a long time and this
October a party of 50 of us are travelling to Jersey for
their over 35's 10 a side competition. I won't be playing!
“Over the coming years we aim to maintain our progress
on the playing field from the 1st team down to youngest
age groups. Everyone is in this together.”
UPDATE: Following their victory on 20th April,
Caerleon RFC were declared champions of their league
and will be promoted. Contgratulations from everyone
at Rugby Club Magazine!
Karen Reyes is a recent club sponsor
of Caerleon RFC and she spoke to
Rugby Club Magazine about her
positive association with the club,
“Sponsoring local sport and the
community seemed like a natural step
for my new business and the club very
much mirror the comradery I feel I have
with my staff.
It also appears that my timing could not
have been much better as the team are
enjoying an excellent season. I took the
plunge into business 18 months ago and
haven’t looked back, from Thomas Cook
to La Vida Travel and this has been a
wonderful experience and when I was
given the opportunity to benefit from
my association with everyone involved
and supporting the club I couldn’t say
no. They are all a great example to
everybody and I would like to wish
everyone at Caerleon Rugby good luck
and best wishes for the future.”
