wmavon RFC has enjoyed a superb season this time around and is well positioned to claim a league title by the end
of the campaign. Rugby Club Magazine caught up with their Secretary Gareth Edwards to find out more about the
good work that they’ve been doing lately.
He told us, “I’ve been involved for more
than fifty years now. I enjoy being a part of
the club, particularly some of the successes
that the team has had over the years. We’ve
won a few tournaments and got to the final
of the West Wales Cup once.
“The mood at the club is pretty high at the
moment. We’re doing well in the league
at the moment with games in hand on the
teams around us. We’re in the last eight of
the bowl as well so we’re hoping to do well
there too.
“A big part of the success has been the
work that the three coaches have been
doing. They’ve got the boys believing
in themselves and playing with real
confidence. There’s a good level of
professionalism at the club now and the
players have really brought into putting
in the level of commitment needed to be
successful.
“Rugby is a very important part of the
village. We’ve a clubhouse that is open to
the community to use and they have the
option to organise any events that they’d
like to so we’re playing an important role
in the local area.
“Youth rugby is very important to the club
because it is from there that we should be
getting the next generation of players for
the club. We did lose our youth team a
few years ago and we did suffer from that
“When events are
put on then we still
get good numbers,
particularly on
match days .”

at first team level. We’ve now got rugby
from U7s all the way up so there’s a strong
set up that we have in place at junior and
minis level.
“The biggest challenge for the club will be
to continue to provide an opportunity to
play the game for the community. That’s
not always easy, it is not necessarily
the rugby that is suffering but more the
clubhouse these days which means we
have to find different ways to raise funds
at the club. When we set up the clubhouse
it was to help the rugby side of things but
