When I first moved to Derby, Derby RFC was the natural choice for me as a club playing at the right level in the locality. We are a community club and are not exclusive in terms of who can play for us. We cater for serious players and social players in the men’s senior section, have a ladies team, Colts (U17 – U19) and junior sides from U7s to U16s.” The Role “The most rewarding part of the role is seeing young players come through to first team rugby from the juniors and Colts. We have had many examples of this in recent years and the average age of the first team currently reflects the approach that the club has adopted. The most challenging thing is trying to maintain lower teams at the club to cater for social and ‘occasional’ players. It is sometimes difficult to get the numbers for our teams and when we do the opposition might cry off.” This Season “The mood at the moment is good in general. It has certainly improved in recent years and much credit for that is down to Head Coach Roxy Fearon who, as well as coaching, works hard to get more involvement from players in social events. This season has been slightly disappointing in terms of 1st XV results. Last season we over-achieved in terms of results, probably being lucky in many matches. This season has often seen the reverse, with matches we should have won being lost. Most of the matches we have lost this season we were winning at www.derbyrfc.com www.sportip.biz 53
