Tregaron
C
lwb Rygbi Tregaron is the official name of the club (Welsh for Tregaron rugby club) and was founded nearly 40 years
ago .There is a reference that young men from the area had played against Lampeter University around the time that
the WRU was formed. Their Treasurer Geraint Morgan told us more about the club.
He said, “I played rugby for the club for 26 years – all my school friends
went to the club and hence the reason for joining . I have been on the
committee for years, as Secretary, Fixture Secretary and am Treasurer at
present – a position i have held for nearly 10 years. My wife is secretary at
the moment. The biggest challenge as treasurer is covering our travelling
costs. The most rewarding thing is that you’re still part of a team after
stopping playing and you share the ups and downs of winning and
losing.
One of the key individuals involved in the foundation of the club was
the PE teacher in the local secondary school, Gwynfor Jones and to this
day excellent links exists between the school and the club and our home
games are played on the school field. The first captain and chairman of
the club Alun Davies is still an active committee member.
The club is very much part of the community with the clubhouse used
by the local cricket, angling and trotting clubs for various meetings etc.
Due to our relatively isolated geographical position travelling is always a
huge challenge and costly and we were grateful for the last reorganisation
of the national leagues by the WRU which has reduced our travelling as
the restructuring was carried out with geography in mind.
This season has been an excellent one with nearly every game a well
contested one and many of them going down to the wire. What has been
pleasing this season is that we have won games which at times looked
unlikely. As we head into the last third of the season Llangadog and
ourselves top the table with everything to play for, which itself has
increased the interest locally both on and off the field.
Gwion Savill is a fan and sponsor of Tregaron Rugby
Club with his business Moduron Hafad Garage. He
recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his positive
association with the club. “I am a born and bred Tregaron
lad and although I played rugby at school and university I
ended up being more involved in motorsports.
The boys at the club are a great bunch and many of them
use the garage for their repairs and servicing. The team are
very young and it’s great to see them enjoying such a good
season.
They seem to play better when their backs are against the
wall and therefore I feel a promotion and tougher opposition
would suit them. I would like to wish everyone at Tregaron
rugby the very best of success for the remainder of the
season.”
