atherstone Atherstone RFC F irst established in 1968, Atherstone RFC is based on Ratcliffe Road in Warwickshire and their first team currently competes in the Midlands 4 West (South) League. They are a family friendly club which plays an important role in the local community and we caught up with a number of their members to find out more about the good work they’ve been doing. Julie Douglas – Honorary Secretary/Press and Media “The mood here is very good considering the challenges we have faced this season. At the end of last season we lost our coach and five regular first team players. The new coach stayed for about three matches. In addition we were unable to use our floodlit training area and had to gain funding for potable floodlights. Despite all of this, the lads have produced some tremendous performances. Team spirit is fantastic thanks to the work of both the first and second team captains Phil Mulvey and Matt Kent. We are committed to playing an important role in the community. We do not own a ground; we do not own a club house. Our club house is Atherstone Sports Club Ltd which supports cricket, hockey football and rugby. The Club House is made available for hire to the community. The difficulty with this is that any bar monies do not come into the rugby club directly. We are a family oriented club and whenever we put on any social activities we make sure that children are welcome (where appropriate) and that we do traditional party games to keep them happy. We want to survive to our 50th year and beyond! It will be important to continue to build the junior and senior section. We are also going to work with Atherstone Sports Club to ensure their financial security as without the facilities we could not survive as a club.” “This is my 3rd season at Atherstone rugby club. The mood here is good, even with everything that’s gone on this season. Our plans for the rest of the season are to encourage the younger players to get involved and help bring them on, as for the first team my aims are to keep this squad together and keep the spirit there. For me personally seeing the youngsters coming through is very rewarding.” Phil Mulvey – Club/First Team Captain Hotdoggers Club Info - www.websiteetc.co.uk - Twitter : @Hotdoggers- Founded 1970 www.sportip.biz 25 Issue 52 25
