better than we had thought, mainly
due to the newly formed squad of
younger players our Coach Dan
Bowman has brought through the
youth system. Over the remainder
of the season we are aiming to play
as well as we can and enjoy it. If
you do that success will follow.
Youth rugby is very important;
as it is the life blood of the club,
especially in an area where rugby
union is not played much
in schools and
rugby league is
paramount.

We caught up with President
Derek Robinson to find out more
about the good work that they’ve
been doing. He told us, “I have
been involved in the club for 50
years after joining from our local
steelworks club. The attraction was
the opportunity to play at a higher
level of rugby and also that I was
following friends.
The biggest challenges of my role
are to enable an amateur club to
prosper at a level which we can
compete, and ensure that there is
somewhere for the youth of the
area to start and enjoy all that is
good about the game.
The club is quite buoyant at this
time, although like a lot of clubs
we could use more senior players.
(Quite often we could field a side
from the 2 golf societies at
the club.) This
season has

ased at The Ellis Sports Ground on Moss Bay Road in Cumbria,
Workington RFC currently competes in the Northern Division of the
Cumbrian League. They have been in fine form so far this season, sitting
just behind leaders Silloth as the campaign reaches its climax.
