F
irst established in 1919, Cashel RFC is based at Spafield on Old Road in County Tipperary and their first team currently
competes in Division 2A of the Ulster Bank League. Rugby Club Magazine caught up with Club Representative Peter
Silke to find out more about the good work that they’ve been doing lately.
He told us, “This is my 25th season
with the club. My job brought me to
Cashel where I knew nobody. I had
three young sons and as the rugby
season was just starting I got them
involved and it grew from there.
We had some wonderful years with
under age success in the 90's, winning
East Munster trophies and our under
18's getting to the Munster League
final. A number of our players won
a Munster Junior Schools Cup with
Rockwell College on a team that
included Cashels' most famous son
Denis Leamy.

Progressing through the leagues and
winning the Junior 1 league three
times, the Munster Junior Clubs
Challenge Cup three times and finally
winning the Munster junior Cup for
the first time in 2011 was special. In the
same season we were promoted to the
All-Ireland League and the first year in
Senior Rugby we won all our league
games to be promoted to Division 2A.
In 2009 our firsts and seconds won all
the Munster trophies on offer and we
also opened our new clubhouse.
The mood here at the moment is good
and we are in mid table in the league.
We have plateaued in recent times
but it is difficult to keep climbing up
the leagues. We are very much a rural
community club which has been our
strength over the years.
We always depended in local players
who came through our under age
setup. It is difficult to maintain this and
difficult to keep a balance between our
own players and players from outside
our catchment area. It is however an
important balance to achieve if you
want to maintain local support.
Over the years many players have
