Cashel FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Cashel RFC F irst established in 1919, Cashel RFC is based at Spafield on Old Road in County Tipperary and their first team currently competes in Division 2A of the Ulster Bank League. Rugby Club Magazine caught up with Club Representative Peter Silke to find out more about the good work that they’ve been doing lately. He told us, “This is my 25th season with the club. My job brought me to Cashel where I knew nobody. I had three young sons and as the rugby season was just starting I got them involved and it grew from there. We had some wonderful years with under age success in the 90's, winning East Munster trophies and our under 18's getting to the Munster League final. A number of our players won a Munster Junior Schools Cup with Rockwell College on a team that included Cashels' most famous son Denis Leamy. 46 Issue 52 Progressing through the leagues and winning the Junior 1 league three times, the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup three times and finally winning the Munster junior Cup for the first time in 2011 was special. In the same season we were promoted to the All-Ireland League and the first year in Senior Rugby we won all our league games to be promoted to Division 2A. In 2009 our firsts and seconds won all the Munster trophies on offer and we also opened our new clubhouse. The mood here at the moment is good and we are in mid table in the league. We have plateaued in recent times but it is difficult to keep climbing up the leagues. We are very much a rural community club which has been our strength over the years. We always depended in local players who came through our under age setup. It is difficult to maintain this and difficult to keep a balance between our own players and players from outside our catchment area. It is however an important balance to achieve if you want to maintain local support. Over the years many players have played under age rugby with Munster
