HALIFAX HALIFAX Halifax RUFC is a great example of a club that plays a vital role in their local community. Rugby Club Magazine caught up with Ladies Team Manager Heidi Sowrey to find out more about the club. Involvement She told us, “Being new to the Halifax area, and coming from a family of Rugby Fanatics, I knew that the best way to meet people and become part of a community was to join a Rugby Club. This was 2 years ago, and I haven’t looked back since. The family atmosphere at the club is so welcoming and I quickly became part of the family. I strive to achieve this with all girls that join the team, because it isn’t easy being one person walking into a thriving rugby club.” The Role “My role as Team Manager is a lot easier now the Ladies team have a compliment of volunteers with different roles. It is a challenge holding everyone together. I am constantly texting out and posting on Social Media to keep the club and the team at the forefront of everyone’s mind. It’s a lot to expect people to give up their spare time as much as I ask of them, but keeping the family feel helps – no one wants to let anyone else down. The most rewarding part is when we have numbers out to training every week. At the moment, from only 2 people a week, we are turning out a minimum of 15 and that’s a massive boost. Also, we have entered a league this year. It feels amazing to know that all the hard work that has gone in to setting up a team will now pay off, with people playing competitive rugby. It makes it worthwhile. Also, having players selected to play County Rugby is massively rewarding – we had a couple of girls go through trials last year and play at a higher level. It was amazing seeing how far they had come with the help of Halifax and all its supporters.” 94 ISSUE 49
