CANVEY ISLAND CANVEY ISLAND Canvey Island RUFC currently competes in the Essex (Canterbury Jack) League 1 and they are based at Tewkes Creek on Dovervelt Road. They are led by the team of President Robbie Edwards and Chairman Steve Clarke and they are looking to progress under their guidance. The club has put together a history of which they have every right to be proud. They were initially set-up in November 1970 by a group of players who wished to play locally rather than having to travel to represent other teams. The team played their first game against Mid Essex Tech at Chelmsford with Canvey having just 13 players and wearing some shirts that they had to borrow. The team’s current group of players will be keen to add to their past accomplishments over the coming years. Their first team has made a positive start to the current campaign and have managed to win all 3 of their opening fixtures. This sees them sitting in the top half of the table with 8 points on the board which should help them to put last season’s struggles behind them. These good early results will provide them with the perfect platform from which to go on and build a successful campaign. So long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they could find themselves mounting a title challenge. One of the main reasons for their good start has been their superb defensive performances which are reflected by the fact that they have the best defence in the league. Up to now they have conceded just 21 points at a rate of 7 per match. 84 ISSUE 49
