LANGHOLM
Langholm RFC is based at Miltown in Dumfriesshire and their first team currently competes in
Division 1 of the BT East Regional League. They are led by the team of President Michael Bell
and President Kenneth Pool and the club is looking to progress under their guidance.
The club was first established in 1871 by William
Scott, Alfred Moses and William Lightbody, who
were sons of the local tweed manufacturers. After
spending time being educated in Public Schools
in England they invited people from the town to
play the game that they had learned, “Foot ball”.
Since then the club has achieved tremendous
longevity, putting together a record of which they
have every right to be proud. Their current group
of players will be keen to add to their illustrious
past over the coming years.
This season it would be fair to say that their first
team has not got off to the start that they would
have liked with one win from their first 4 matches.
This sees them sitting in the bottom half of the
table with 4 points on the board.
There is still plenty of the campaign left to play
however and so long as they can put together a
good run of form they will quickly climb the table.
This would provide them with the perfect platform
from which to build a successful season.
One of the major positives from the games so
far has been the impressive form of goal kicker
Nathan Smith who has already contributed 23
points. Having a reliable fly-half is vital for any
team as it gives them the ability to punish any
misdemeanours from opposition players and can
help to clinch tight fixtures.
A number of players have already scored tries
for the side and perhaps surprisingly the charts
are led by Second Row Daniel Norden who has
crossed the line twice. They will be looking for
their backs to add to the teams attacking potential
as they gel together as a unit as the season
progresses.
Langholms disappointing start to the current
league campaign should not take away from
the good work that is being done at the club as
they continue to play a vital role in their local
community. Hopefully they will be able to keep
up the good work that they have been doing for
many years to come and everyone at Rugby Club
Magazine wishes them the best of luck.
