PANMURE PANMURE Based at the Forthill Sports Club in Angus, Panmure RFC will be competing in Division 2 Midlands of the BT Caledonia League. They are led by President Chic Millar who is supported by Treasurer Alistair Watson and the club is looking to progress under their guidance. The club has a history of which they have every right to be proud, having first been established on the 18th September 1880. The name of ‘Panmure’ was chosen as a number of original members lived around Panmure Terrace. They started as an open club without former pupil affiliations. They played their first matches towards the end of 1880 against teams such as Dundee High School, Newport and Dundee Institution. Dundee High School still remains and shared their 125th anniversary with Panmure. The clubs current group of players will be keen to add to the club’s history over the coming years. Perhaps one of the main reasons for Panmure’s longevity is the superb youth section that they have in place. This part of their set-up looks to provide young players from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their juniors are able to develop over the coming years. Last season it would be fair to say that their first team endured a difficult campaign as they compiled a record of having won 2 and lost 14 of their 16 league matches. This saw them finish near the bottom of the table with 7 points on the board. As long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they should be able to put extra wins on the board. Although Panmure did not enjoy the season they would have liked last time around this is a club which plays a vital role in their local community. Hopefully they will be able to continue in the same manner for many years to come and Rugby Club Magazine would like to wish them the best of luck. “The club has a history of which they have every right to be proud.”
