GOSFORTH
GOSFORTH
With roots dating back to 1877, Gosforth RFC is
a great example of a club with a proud history
which has evolved in order to continue playing a
vital role in the community. Rugby Club Magazine
caught up with Club Representative Neil
Jamieson to find out more about the good work
that they’ve been doing.
Involvement
He started by telling us about his involvement,
saying, “I am privileged to be President of Gosforth
for the next two years. As a co-founder of the new
Gosforth in 1996, it is great to be rewarded with this
honour. We, as a Club, are very fortunate to have a
fantastic group of volunteers and sponsors who since
our reformation have given their time to continue the
great name of Gosforth Rugby.
The lads - I use the term lightly - as they range from
40 to 70 something, and some girls, have all come
up through the ranks from players or as fathers who
coached their kids in the mini juniors. As a grass
roots club, we exist, not from great income streams
like the big clubs, but from volunteers putting in their
money and time in running a great club. Our rewards
are when we see 3 senior teams take to the field on
a Saturday or youngsters growing up to be seniors.
It’s cradle to grave rugby.”
Atmosphere
“In 1877 we started life as Gosforth Nomads, today
we live up to that name as we are on the move yet
again and not because of choice. Our landlord has
served an untimely notice on the club despite a
gentleman’s agreement and many false promises.

ISSUE 48
We have to vacate Druid Park by September. Whilst,
for most clubs of our status, this would be a killer
blow, we are fortunate to have key members of the
club who have taken up the challenge and used this
situation, to forge a new home for the club.
Our interim home will be back where we started back
in 96 having being kicked out of Newcastle Falcons
in 1996 with the creation of professional rugby. An
offer to move again, 7 years ago, was to be our
long term home and the volunteers have once again
worked hard to make it so. So the current mood is
one of anger and despair, to be evicted in such a
way. That said, our new rugby management have
built a new team who are very opportunistic for this
coming season.
We have a strong rugby team management, who are
once again building a large pool of players to make
up the 3 senior sides.”
