TEWKESBURY
TEWKESBURY
Tewkesbury Rugby Club was founded in 1881 under the leadership of Mr T.F. Cottam
with the Rev Thurston Rivington taking the role of Chairman.
The first competitive match took place on the
Swilgate meadow on the 5th November 1881
against Evesham, Tewkesbury came out the
victors by 1 try to nil.
My own involvement in the club started at a
very young age as my father Robin Watkins
played prop and my mother helped in the
kitchen with after match food and cleaning.
By the age of 15 my then sports teacher
Peter Remmer who also played for the club
took me down to play for the colts team
which was managed by Alan Snarey.
I’ve been here ever since in various roles
from 2nd XV capt, playing 1st XV, Players
Chairman to currently being 1st XV manager
and a fellow director of the club.
We have just appointed a new coach in
Andy Wadley after former player coach
Shaun Everis stood down who took us to
our highest Gloucester premier league
finish. Will Hartland has been voted in for
the 2014/2015 season with Paul Baker and
James Watkins (my son) vice captains.
The feeling is good in the club at the
moment with the new players chairman Gary
Lewis pulling together a kit package for the
players and Geoff Sallis (Hon. Secretary)
doing a massive job in raising funds for
new changing rooms. There is a short fall
in monies needed so if anyone out there
would like to sponsor in any way a thriving
local rugby team please contact us via our
website Tewkesburyrfc.co.uk.
On December 7th 2013 we help a president’s
day which was attended by Bob Reeves
who officially opened a new kitchen and
extension work which had been carried out.
Other guests that day included Phil Vickery,
local and borough councillors and past and
present players.
