COBHAM COBHAM Cobham Rugby club was first established in 1930 as Old Surbitonians by the first group of school leavers from Surbiton County School. They play their home games at the Old Surbitonians Memorial Ground on Fairmile Lane in Surrey and their first team currently competes in the London South Division 1. They are led by the team of President Lionel Frewin and Chairman Steve Heard and the club is looking to progress under their guidance. Last season the first team put together a strong campaign having compiled a record of having won 13 and lost 13 of their 26 matches. This saw them finish in a safe mid-table position with 68 points on the board. Their attentions will now have turned towards the new season and last year’s performances should provide them with a solid platform from which to build. So long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they should be in with a good chance of pushing on up the table. The club has been pro-active during the offseason as they look to improve and one major announcement for them was the appointment of Mike Cudmore as their new Director of Rugby following the retirement of Billy Davison who had spent 9 years in the role. Speaking to the Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser, Cudmore said of his appointment, “I am looking forward to my new role with Cobham RFC. After meeting with Steve Heard and Lionel Frewin and then visiting the facility it was an easy decision to make. Also, what was a big factor for me was that the club’s and their beliefs and philosophy of how the game should be played and developed are what I also firmly believe in. I can’t wait to get started.” One of the standout features of the Cobham set up is the superb youth set up that they have in place which is the life blood of the club. They provide a welcome environment for youth players from U13 to U18 to take up the game and look to help them to reach their full potential. 78 ISSUE 48
