BIGGLESWADE BIGGLESWADE Biggleswade RUFC was founded in 1949 by members mainly connected with agriculture who acquired a field which often had animals on. Members of this time still at the Club say how they learnt to side step by dodging the “cowpats”! Today is very different with the Club owning a modern clubhouse with clubroom bar, lounge bar and four squash courts (lounge bar and some changing/toilet areas have just been refurbished, following a lot of work in obtaining a grant). There are three excellent pitches on this site, one with floodlights, and a further three rented pitches across the road. been very pro-active in leading the Club forward both on and off the field and has set some tough targets to be achieved. Last season the 1st XV gained promotion to Midlands 2 (East) with a very young side playing some fast attractive rugby. However, Matt Trigg the Head Coach, is well aware that next season will be much harder and more challenging. Mike Adams, the groundsman and his helpers work hard to maintain these pitches in a condition that is envied by many clubs; only one match was lost last season to the particularly bad weather, when most clubs were unable to play for several weeks. The Club is often asked to host County matches at Youth level. The Club’s aim is to consolidate its position in this league with the young side gaining necessary experience to continue to improve. The 2nd and 3rd XV’s also had excellent seasons with both being at the top end of their Merit Tables. Having beaten Stockwood Park in their league matches the Club lost to them in an exciting Bedfordshire Cup Final which Stockwood fully deserved. Steve Matthews, the Chairman for the last few years and backed by an experienced top end Committee has These good playing results have seen a small influx of players and together with some excellent home grown talent from the Youth sides hopefully coming through in the next few years the target set is to reach Midlands 1 in five years - a hard task. Mini and Youth Rugby is considered very important to the Club as the majority of senior players at the Club have come via this route. In rece nt years several players have progressed from our Youth sides to Academies, and to Premiership and Championship sides. The Club has also been supplying many players to Bedfordshire & East Midlands Youth teams.
