STRATHMORE We want to build the new club house extension for the benefit of all our players and members, Increase coach numbers, increase player numbers, and hopefully one if not several of our players will get to play for a Scotland squad.” Bob Baldie, President “I was first lured to the club in 1982 at the age of 15. Turning out for our 3rds in the afternoon having played for the school in the morning. There seemed to be an abundance of charismatic characters in those days that had real passion for the game and for the black shirt they pulled on. Our captain then was Big John Hamilton a farmer and a real wookie of a man a second row forward with shovels for hands. Grown men hung on every word and inspired a generation of Strathie players proud to wear the silver griffin on their chest. Another farmer ‘weeJohn’ , a typical wirey loon, mastered us in the dark art of front row free masonry and giving 100% for the club on and off the pitch. There was genuine camaraderie off the pitch. Bizarre songs and games were shared after matches too which captivated and held young players. Hosting touring sides such as the Frankfurt Americans (5th armoured tank division) was always memorable both for antics off and on the park! A wall of plaques and pendants pay homage to hard fought games and friendships around the globe. In contrast to the old days the modern Strathmore is geared towards youth development, player education and welfare. www.rugbyclub.biz 45
