THE BRITISH BROAD PLAIN AEROPLANE COMPANY BROAD PLAIN Broad Plain RFC has enjoyed a successful off-season and there is now plenty of excitement for the new campaign around the club. Representative Nick Jeanes took the time to tell us more about some of the good work that they’ve been doing in a variety of different areas. Atmosphere He started by telling us about the positive atmosphere that has been generated at the club, saying, “The mood here is upbeat, we lost 10 1st team players 2 seasons ago, following a double promotion and a relegation, but there has been a large influx of new players since, which seems to be continuing this season. We are looking forward to next season and anticipating improved performance and attracting and retaining even more players. The Juniors keep expanding, so much so that we have to think of limiting numbers in some squads.” Youth “Youth cricket is hugely important; not only to support the senior squads, but also to give kids in this area a chance to enjoy the benefits of rugby. There are some fairly deprived areas in south Bristol so the club has an important role to play in developing youngsters in a positive way.” Chip ‘n’ Dales Karaoke/Disco The Nursery Squad “Broad Plain has a ‘unique selling point’ in its Nursery Squad for kids aged 4-6. Basically we take kids, wear them out and feed them afterwards, which is a great offer for parents who have kids screaming the hous e down on a rainy winter Sunday. With around 20-30 kids in this squad, each year it pops out a new Under-7 squad, we just need to persuade a couple of their parents to coach them, and we’ve got another squad! Importantly, the guys who coach the Nursery are not parents, so are not tempted to follow their own child up through the years. I would recommend this to any club wanting to start a junior section from scratch.
