TRURO
Truro RFC is based at St Clements Hill in Cornwall and they currently compete in
the Tribute Western Counties League South West Division. They are led by the team
of President Paul Williams and Chairman Brian Hankins and the club has made a
considerable amount of progress under their guidance.
The first team has enjoyed a strong campaign
this time around, managing to win 18 and lose 8
of their 26 matches. This saw them claim a good
top half finish in the table with 90 points on the
board.
This should provide the team with a good
platform upon which to build as they head into
the off-season and they can be proud of their
efforts. If they are able to retain their current
group of players and perhaps add one or two
quality additions there does not seem to be any
reason why they will not be able to mount a title
challenge.
Truro is not a club that focuses solely upon their
senior section however as they are also committed
to the development of young players in their
local area. It is with this in mind that they have
a number of youth sides running which look to
provide a safe and enjoyable environment in
which to play the game.
It is important for any side to be able to produce
their own talent and this is an area that they
appear to have covered. Coaching staff overseeing
their teams are confident that there are a number
of players involved with the potential to go on and
play first team rugby.
In order to help their players successfully make
the transition into the adult game Truro also
has a 2nd team. This allows them to give players
experience of playing at senior even if they are
not yet considered ready for first team action.
Another benefit of having a 2nd team is that it
allows the firsts to benefit from greater strength
in depth. If they are ever left short on numbers
through injury or work commitments they have
the option of calling replacements up with a
limited amount of disruption.
It is worth noting that Truro also benefits from
some high quality facilities both on and off the
field. Having good pitches can help encourage
76

players to play attacking rugby which in turn
will assist in recruitment when it comes to
strengthening the squad.
Off the field the club has a clubhouse which is
available for all types of meetings, conferences
and private functions. This is particularly
important in the current financial climate as it
has the potential to provide a year round income
to help cover costs.
Truro is a club which is clearly very well-run
behind the scenes, thanks to the hard work put in
by their Committee and this is helping them to
achieve success on it. Hopefully they will be able
to continue in the same manner for many years
to come and Rugby Club Magazine would like to
wish them the best of luck.
