CHOBHAM CHOBHAM they also have a number of additional sides running. This allows them to give youngsters experience of the senior game even if they are not yet considered ready for first team action which can be an important step in the development process. CHOBHAM Chobham Rugby Club is based at Fowlers Wells on Windsor Road in Surrey and their first team currently competes in London Division 1 South. They are led by the team of Chairman Vince Kerr and President Nigel Heslop and the club has made a considerable amount of progress under their guidance. The club was first established in 1967 by a group of rugby enthusiasts in the ‘Four Horseshoes’. They have certainly come a long way since then and are now one of the Premier Community Clubs in Surrey and South East England with a membership of over 2000 people. Chobham’s colours for many years were Scarlet and Gold, having been taken from the Courage Brewery who supplied the team’s beer. The first playing strip that they ever had was green before being replaced by hoops as was the first club tie. Their first team enjoyed a strong campaign this time around, managing to put together A look behind the front door. a record of having won 17 and lost 9 of their 26 matches. This saw them finish in the top 5 which represented a successful season as they accumulated 85 points. This should provide the team with a good platform upon which to build as they prepare for the 2014-15 campaign. As long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions there does not seem to be any reason why they will not be able to mount a title challenge. The club’s Director of Rugby, Nigel Guy, took the time to tell their official website about the people who have contributed to the team’s success, saying, “There are many people who contribute to the success of our club at senior level; the managers, coaches, video analyst, touch judges, photographers, comms, other rugby related helpers; our medical and physio team led by Hugh and Ellen who performed brilliantly this year particularly when dealing with some tricky injuries; the bar and kitchen staff and all those who organised the great pre match lunches; our commercial team; and last but not least our tremendous supporters.” Another benefit of having so many teams is that it allows the first team to benefit from far greater strength in depth. If they are ever left short on numbers through injury or work commitments then they can call players up with a limited amount of disruption. There is much to admire about the Chobham set-up and this has been reflected in the superb season that they have just enjoyed. Hopefully they will be able to keep up the good work for many years to come and Rugby Club Magazine would like to wish them the best of luck.
