Hodgson Sayers has completed a programme of roofing works at schools across the North East, including projects involving thermal upgrades, re-roofing and specialist roof repairs.
THE works were delivered for education trusts and local authorities during the summer holidays, allowing the contractor to carry out improvements while schools were closed to pupils and staff.
The programme included projects at St Michael’ s RC Primary School, Langley Park Primary School, Teesdale School and Sixth Form, St Anne’ s CofE Primary School and Glynwood Primary School.
Roofing works carried out across North East schools
At St Michael’ s RC Primary School, part of Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust, Hodgson Sayers carried out improvements to five roofs, including a thermal upgrade.
Bats and nesting birds were identified alongside asbestos within the existing roof, requiring the contractor to work with ecologists and specialist asbestos contractors before the roofing works could proceed.”
The project involved managing a number of constraints associated with the existing building.

At St Anne’ s CofE Primary School in Bishop Auckland, Hodgson Sayers delivered the first phase of a re-roofing programme for Durham County Council.
“ Every project is different and we regularly have to overcome technical, logistical and practical challenges while working around the needs of the school.”
The works included thermal upgrades to the roof spaces and improvements to a large polycarbonate roof section covering an outdoor play area.
Specialist roofing work and site constraints
The landlocked site at St Anne’ s presented logistical challenges, with materials having to be moved around the school by forklift.
Some elements of the project also required bespoke roofing systems and specialist skills.
Six operatives, including two roofing apprentices, worked alongside an experienced senior roofing operative on the scheme.
At Glynwood Primary School, Hodgson Sayers completed Phase One of a three-year roofing improvement programme for Gateshead Council.
The wider summer programme was scheduled around the school holidays, with the contractor required to complete works within a limited period before pupils and staff returned.
Hodgson Sayers works across education sector
Hodgson Sayers, which was established in 1979, operates across the North of England and the Midlands and employs around 100 people.
Its services include roofing, civils and building maintenance, heritage conservation, and security products and systems.
John Sayers, managing director of Hodgson Sayers, said:“ Working on schools requires a particular understanding of the environment. Projects often need to be delivered during the holidays, giving our teams a very limited window in which to complete the work safely and to a high standard.
“ Every project is different and we regularly have to overcome technical, logistical and practical challenges while working around the needs of the school.
“ Our experience means we understand how to plan and deliver these projects effectively, whether we are working on an historic building, dealing with specialist requirements or managing a challenging site.
Ultimately, our work helps to ensure schools have buildings that are safe, well maintained and fit for the future, which is something we are proud to contribute to.”
