How has the circuit changed
through the years?
The original Spa-Francorchamps circuit was
made by linking the public roads connecting
the villages of Francorchamps, Malmedy
and Stavelot, running through the Ardennes
forests. At first it mainly hosted motorcycle
races until 1925 when it hosted the very first
Belgian Grand Prix.
Spa was part of the inaugural 1950 F1 world
championship, but even for its reputation as
a ‘manly’ circuit it was quickly considered
to be “old-fashioned” - 14km was too long,
too fast and dangerous. Two drivers lost their
lives in 1960 in just one race weekend (RIP
Bristow and Stacey).
In the 70’s the frequency of serious accidents
in motorsport meant there was no choice
but to remove circuits that were considered
“too dangerous” from the F1 calendar.
Circuits Zolder and Nivelles thus hosted the

Wie hat sich die Rennstrecke über
die Jahre verändert?
Die originale Rennstrecke von Spa-
Francorchamps entstand durch die
Verbindung der öffentlichen Straßen, welche
durch die Ardennenwälder verlief und die
Ortschaften Francorchamps, Malmedy und
Stavelot miteinander verband. Anfangs
wurde die Strecke für Motorradrennen
verwendet, bis hier 1925 der erste Belgische
Grand Prix veranstaltet wurde.
Spa war Teil der ersten Formel-1-
Weltmeisterschaft 1950, aber selbst für
ihren Ruf als „männliche“ Rennstrecke
galt sie schnell als „altmodisch“ - 14 km
waren zu lang, zu schnell und gefährlich.
Zwei Fahrer verloren 1960 an nur einem
Rennwochenende ihr Leben (RIP Bristow
und Stacey).
In den 70er Jahren gab es aufgrund
