IMAGINE controlling a
horse at a full gallop
over 100 metres with
one hand, while at
the same time using a
sword or lance to pick a suspended ring from the air or
remove a small object from
the ground.
This is the challenge for participants of Tentpegging, formerly known as Gymkhana.
To successfully strike the target, a rider needs to focus on
his or her aim without being
distracted by the horse. This
calls for an extremely wellschooled horse that has no
fear of noise or sudden movements and which will respond
to commands instantaneously.
Judges award points for style
and accuracy, and a high
standard of riding skill is required to gallop a horse at full
speed while maintaining posture and striking the target.
Each 100-metre run is over in
a mere four seconds.
