SOUTH ON THE AFRICA ROAD
Astronomical Observatory and August’ s long, cloudless nights make it the perfect time to have your mind quietly rearranged by the Milky Way. Book a guided session at the SAAO, then wrap up in a farm guesthouse with a bowl of potjie and a tot of Karoo brandy. There are no malls. There is no signal. There is only sky.
September: Barberton, Mpumalanga While the tour buses queue at Blyde River Canyon, the sleepy gold-rush town of Barberton sits quietly atop some of the oldest exposed rock on Earth: a 3.5-billion-year-old geological formation so extraordinary it has its own name – the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. September’ s clear winter skies are ideal for tackling the Fortuna Mine hiking trail or cycling the Barberton-to- Bulembu route across the Swazi border. The town’ s Victorian-era pubs and pioneer cemeteries add a wonderfully eccentric layer to the whole affair.
October: Mapungubwe, Limpopo Long before European settlers arrived, a sophisticated African kingdom flourished at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, trading gold with China, India, and Egypt. Today, Mapungubwe National Park( a UNESCO World Heritage Site) preserves this extraordinary legacy alongside sable antelopes, elephants, and fever-tree floodplains that feel genuinely end-of-the-earth. October’ s heat keeps the crowds thin, the animals restless around waterholes, and the baobabs improbably beautiful. The tented camp’ s infinity pool, overlooking the bush, may be the most quietly spectacular seat in the country.
