CONSERVATION
TURNS OUT GIRAFFES AREN’ T JUST ONE SPECIES AFTER ALL, THEY’ RE FOUR, EACH WITH THEIR OWN PLACE IN AFRICA’ S WILD TAPESTRY.
For centuries, giraffes have glided across Africa’ s landscapes, elegant silhouettes against blazing sunsets. We’ ve long thought of them as a single species, varying only in spots and range. But science has upended that assumption.
This groundbreaking discovery reshapes everything we thought we knew about the world’ s tallest mammals. Years of DNA analysis and field research confirm four distinct species, each as genetically different from one another as brown bears are from polar bears.
The Four Species:
• Northern giraffe( Giraffa camelopardalis)
• Reticulated giraffe( Giraffa reticulata, Somali giraffe)
• Masai giraffe( Giraffa tippelskirchi)
• Southern giraffe( Giraffa giraffa), including South African and Angolan populations
At Mabula Private Game Reserve in Limpopo, those somewhat awkwardly graceful wanderers are no longer just“ giraffes”, they’ re Southern giraffes, one of four species on Earth.“ Each giraffe encounter tells a new chapter in Africa’ s unfolding story of evolution,” says Maralize Mulder of Extraordinary Resorts Management.
By identifying four species, conservationists can now target protection efforts more effectively. For the Southern giraffe, that means renewed efforts to protect rangelands across Southern Africa, habitats safeguarded by reserves such as those managed under the Extraordinary portfolio( extraordinary. co. za @ extraordinary _ times)
For safari-goers, the revelation adds a richer layer to every sighting. Next time you crane your neck to admire a giraffe, remember: you’ re looking at far more than just a tall tale.
