KWAZULU-NATAL
Where I Ate In the Southern Drakensberg, the food is just as important as the views.
Lemon Tree Farm Shop & Bistro Lunch at Lemon Tree Bistro became my favourite pause button between adventures. Tucked away in the Clock Tower Centre, this cheerful farm shop and bistro celebrates local produce and proper home cooking. Before or after your meal, be sure to browse the deli for local products, phenomenal cakes and a selection of arts and crafts. What makes it truly memorable, though, is the people. Manageress Chantal and her team are unmistakably the heart of the place, bringing genuine warmth and an infectious enthusiasm for the job that cannot be manufactured or taught. The owner stops by often to chat with customers, and even her baby Anna makes occasional guest appearances. Inside, the space feels bright and welcoming, making it just as suitable for a quick coffee stop as for a slower midday meal.

What makes it truly memorable, though, is the people.

Moorcroft Manor Boutique Hotel & Restaurant Dinner at Moorcroft Manor arrived with an unexpected gift: as I pulled into the driveway, the mountains turned orange in the dying light – a view that makes you realise how lucky you are to be alive. Owner Mario explained that many visitors use the Moorcroft as a base before tackling the Sani Pass. After seeing the manor and its grounds, it is easy to understand why some guests may find themselves staying longer than planned. The kitchen matches the scenery with food that is beautifully prepared and properly considered – the sort of dinner that turns an evening into an occasion without making a fuss about it.
