NAMIBIA
Namibians hold the plant in such esteem that it appears on the national coat of arms. It is difficult to imagine a more fitting emblem. Resilience rarely finds a better mascot. The finest place to encounter these botanical marvels is along the Welwitschia Drive in Dorob / Namib- Naukluft National Park, roughly 50 to 80 kilometres northeast of Swakopmund. This self-guided route traverses a stark desert plain populated by thousands of specimens in various stages of their astonishingly long lives. Some are youthful by Welwitschia standards, only a few decades old and scarcely a metre across. Others dominate the landscape with the quiet authority that comes from surviving for centuries.
The drive offers more than ancient plants. It also traverses the celebrated Moon Landscape, an eerily beautiful expanse of deeply eroded canyon country sculpted over millennia by the Swakop River. Pale, ridged and seemingly drained of colour, the terrain looks less terrestrial, more, er... moon-like. You half expect a spacecraft to appear over the horizon. Photographers adore it. Geologists delight in it. Everyone else simply stares.
Planning Your Visit A national park permit is required and can be obtained in Swakopmund from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism( MEFT) or the Namibia Wildlife Resorts( NWR) office.
The route is officially designated as a 4x4 drive, although high-clearance vehicles often manage the journey. For travellers seeking deeper insight, several operators in Swakopmund offer guided half-day excursions led by expert naturalists. The landscape is spectacular on its own, but understanding what you are looking at elevates the experience considerably.
Swakopmund makes an ideal base for exploration. This beautifully preserved German colonial town on Namibia’ s Atlantic coast remains one of the country’ s most refined destinations, combining elegant architecture, excellent restaurants, world-class accommodation and a relaxed atmosphere that feels delightfully disconnected from modern urgency.
Beyond the Welwitschia Drive, Swakopmund serves as the perfect launch point for a broader Namibian adventure. The towering crimson dunes of Sossusvlei lie to the south. The vast wildlife theatre of Etosha National Park awaits inland. To the north stretches the haunting Skeleton Coast, one of Africa’ s last truly wild frontiers, where shipwrecks, seals and endless horizons create landscapes that feel almost mythological.
Some journeys are about adventure. And some, the rarest of all, are about perspective. The Welwitschia mirabilis offers both. Not bad for a plant with only two leaves, huh.
