Rove South Africa Volume 8 I Issue 3 | Page 4

Dear Rovers,

From the

Dear Rovers,
There’ s a particular kind of energy that settles over Southern Africa at this time of year – the sort of vibe that has nothing to do with a calendar date and everything to do with the light returning to gardens, mountains waking from their winter hush, and the urge to simply go somewhere. This issue is built entirely around that pull.
We begin at Lanzerac Wine Estate, where a quiet, considered refurbishment is unfolding room by room, proving that renewal doesn’ t need to shout to be felt. From there we head across the border to Zambia, where the‘ green season’ rewards those brave enough to swap the well-worn dry-season safari for thunderclouds, swollen rivers and birdlife in full breeding plumage. Closer to home, we trace the Quiver Tree Route through the Northern Cape – a road trip that somehow remains one of the country’ s best-kept secrets – and hand the keys to Byron Lukas for a Garden Route adventure that involves considerably more bungee jumping and other adrenaline rushes than any editor should really encourage.
Elsewhere, we ask whether Mauritius really just is all about‘ beaches’( spoiler: it’ s not, and worth investigating), rethink what a wellness holiday should actually deliver, and round up the lakes, dams and back roads worth doing a detour for.
If there’ s a single thread running through these pages, it’ s this: the best travel doesn’ t always announce itself.
Sometimes it’ s a refurbished suite, a strawberry farm with an unexpectedly terrifying maze, or a farm stall owner who insists you stay for tea. Wherever this new season of adventure takes you, we hope you travel well.
Until next time,

Milou Staub
