Close to the border it shares with the Northern Cape, in one of the country’ s most unforgiving yet mesmerising landscapes, the Western Cape hosts a landmark annual cultural event. It is here that AfrikaBurn rises from the dust each year, a temporary city built on art, community, and radical self-expression.
Who AfrikaBurn attracts a diverse national and international crowd of creatives, adventurers, dreamers, families, friends, and even solo festival-goers. Artists, performers, engineers, musicians, fire spinners, first-timers, and seasoned‘ Burners come together with one thing in common: participation and collaboration. There are no spectators here. Everyone contributes, whether through art installations, theme camps, workshops, performances, or simply showing up fully as themselves.
The crowd is as eclectic as the costumes: expect a feast for your eyes, with‘ Burners’ in everything from stilettos and goggles to desert-ready makeshift wear, all galivanting under the desert sun. Surprisingly, this is also a family-friendly jol; you’ ll likely see myriad little kiddos running around, having as much unfiltered fun as their guardians.
What AfrikaBurn is a week-long, non-commercial, arts and culture gathering inspired by the global Burning Man movement, but held right here on South African soil. There are no vendors, no advertising, and no corporate
