Ceres Rail: Steam, Scenery and a Surprisingly Good Day Out Ceres Rail is the modern hero of heritage rail, running beautifully restored vintage trains usually hauled by one steam and one diesel locomotive, but subject to change based on operational requirements. Their most popular journey heads over Sir Lowry’ s Pass to Elgin, rolling straight into the Elgin Railway Market where craft gin, live music and all sorts of hard-to-resist deliciousness await. It is hard to tell whether people go for the steam train or for the gourmet pastries, but either way, everyone wins. The company also runs occasional journeys deeper into the mountains towards Ceres, offering long, scenic stretches through farmland and craggy valleys, where the train feels delightfully out of place in the best possible way. These trips are slower, older and wonderfully dramatic, complete with billows of steam large enough to make every adult on board grin like a child.
