At the southernmost tip of the continent, restoration and rewilding are reshaping one of South Africa’ s largest wetland systems: the Nuwejaars Wetlands. This vast landscape lies between Bredasdorp, Elim, Struisbaai and Agulhas in the Overberg, forming a critical ecological corridor at the southern tip of Africa.
A frontline for climate resilience These wetlands and surrounding landscapes support vegetation and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Many are critically threatened and on the brink of extinction. Beyond biodiversity, these wetlands play a vital role in climate resilience by storing carbon, moderating extreme weather events and reducing flood risk.
They also function as a natural water filtration and storage system for nearby communities and farms. This intricate network ultimately feeds into the Ramsar-listed De Mond Nature Reserve, an estuary of exceptional biodiversity value. Equally important is the likelihood that the wetlands recharge the vast aquifers beneath the Agulhas Plain, which supply water to Bredasdorp, Struisbaai, Agulhas and Suiderstrand.
