With the afternoon free, I headed towards Struisbaai, choosing the dirt road over the tar. It felt right. In my brand-new Omoda, I was equal parts excited and cautious, knowing how fond gravel roads are of tyres. The only drama was overtaking two ostriches, which felt like a fair trade.
Struisbaai was buzzing – December in full swing – but what struck me was the absence of high fences and heavy security. It reminded me of growing up in Mauritius, where life felt open and safe. A quick coffee at Shipwreck Café and then on to Cape Agulhas, because standing at the southernmost tip of Africa never gets old.
The true highlight of the trip waited back near Elim: a guided game drive through the wetlands of Nuwejaars. Calling it impressive feels inadequate. The conservation work being done here is exceptional, and the experience itself is layered, thoughtful and deeply moving. From restored wetlands to thriving wildlife, everything feels considered.
Encountering the Rau Quagga, bred to resemble the extinct quagga subspecies and now roaming this restored landscape, was quietly remarkable. Game drives often focus on spectacle, but here the emphasis is on meaning. Nuwejaars does not simply present wildlife, it reveals a narrative of restoration, recovery and care.
