ADVENTURE
Travelling solo means stopping often. There’ s a lot of thinking, observing and chatting to oneself. As a lawn bowls enthusiast, a quick search revealed a club in Caledon, so I made a detour. Sports clubs are famously good value for money, which is already a win, but Caledon Lawn Bowls Club delivered far more than that. Set against a dramatic mountain backdrop, it’ s a beautiful place to roll a bowl amid greenery and warm greetings from locals.
Edwilles, the club member on duty, could not have been more welcoming. Within minutes I was asked whether I wanted to practise alone, or play a game. An hour later, friendships were forming under the midday sun, complete with name-dropping and unexpected connections. One of the players happened to have grown up with the person who sold me my first set of Aero bowls. A selfie later, sent straight to him, and the circle felt neatly closed. Small towns do that.

From Caledon, I continued via Napier and Bredasdorp, turning onto the R317 towards Elim. The landscape softened. Pastel skies, grazing cattle and wide-open spaces brought a sense of calm city life rarely allows. My base for the night was a self-catering cottage at Black Oystercatcher, a working, family-owned wine farm not far from Elim’ s historic heart. Life here feels different – slower, wilder and rooted in place. TERMS AND CONDITIONS For T & C ' s, visit rovesa. co. za Winner will be announced on 1 June 2026.
