LEISURE
THERE’ S ART, TOO Adding something quite extraordinary to the already exceptional is the Turbine’ s“ moving” Art gallery. All the original artworks on the walls – vibrant, large and awesome – are by local South African artists; and they’ re for sale! The hotel takes great pride in featuring local talent and supporting its own heritage.
ALL THINGS GREEN Since inception, the Turbine has successfully merged its historical and contemporary values with green practices and sustainability. In 2022 the hotel made a history-making full-circle move when it began a new phase of generating electricity – 90 solar panels were installed to feed into the hotel’ s electricity supply. Over the years the Turbine has also managed to maintain a relatively light footprint due to the range of energy and watersaving measures incorporated and implemented – from the recycling and re-imagined use of all the old power station effects and materials, to a rainwater harvesting system and myriad other measures.
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Rivalling other top Knysna restaurants, the 90-seater Island Café has a spacious terrace overlooking the canal, perfect for al fresco dining. A recent redesign and makeover introduced fresh flooring, stylish furniture, plush upholstery and a striking ceiling installation, delivering a truly refreshing experience of inspired hospitality. The restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and also offers monthly food and wine pairings. It’ s definitely more Martinique than Portuguese Islands, but if you’ re after a more robust and informal vibe, the Turbine’ s Gastro Pub offers classic pub fare with a delicious Turbine twist, on-tap draught beer and a comprehensively stocked cellar.
The Turbine’ s commitment to sustainability extends to the culinary experience, with head chef Greg Coleman ensuring the hotel’ s cuisine follows the farm-to-table and ocean-to-table philosophy. All seafood is sourced locally, and the organic herbs, vegetables and salad greens are supplied by local farmers. Every bit of food waste goes to a local pig farmer and, since Chef Greg’ s hobby is beekeeping, they use his honey, mostly.
Today, the Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa is heralded as an icon of Knysna’ s heritage, social, economic, ecological integration and environmental sustainability.
Two midweek nights for a couple sharing a Luxury Suite at the Turbine Hotel & Spa on Thesen Islands, Knysna, on a bed-andbreakfast basis, plus a one three-course dinner for two in the Island Café to the value of R1 000.
