ED HUXLEY is a band made up of raw guitars, raw vocals, loud crashing drums and high energy coupled with a bluesy soul. The trio from Cape Town, with Dylan Jones on guitar, Matthew Pullen on bass, and Murray Stephenson on drums, have been gigging around the city after the release of a 4-track EP in early 2010. From a lighter garage blues side similar to early Black Keys and late 60s Stones records, to a much heavier rock sound reminiscent of Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age, RED HUXLEY’s sound is difficult to place within a single genre. Starting out jamming in a squashed bedroom, the band has spent the past three years growing, learning and figuring out the whole music industry, whilst throwing caution to the wind, quitting day jobs to be in the band, touring and just having a great time being a part of the music industry in South Africa.
Since the release of their first EP in 2010, RED HUXLEY’s members have all matured as musicians and through trial and error have learned a lot about recording and songwriting. Saying goodbye to their day jobs, the band started working hard to makes things happen, which can be seen with the release of their single ‘My Own Way’ and its music video in 2012 which, on the back of the Black Keys meets Led Zeppelin sound, takes you on a journey through the desert and leaves you wanting more.
In August 2012, RED HUXLEY was lucky enough to go backstage at One Night In Cape Town and meet one of their favourite bands, Eagles of Death Metal. They had other intentions in mind besides just meeting the band, and gave the guitarist, Dave Catching, their EPK and EP and asked if he would like to produce their debut album. After listening to their stuff, he invited the band to his studio to record. The band set out to raise the money to make this dream come true and record in America. In March 2013, through a fund-raising website kickstarter.com, they reached their target of $25 000. The band embarked on their journey to America in July 2013 - the result: the debut album released in November 2013 - NOTHING MORE. The album was recorded at the world renowned Rancho De La Luna Studio in Joshua Tree, California and produced by Eagles of Death Metal guitarist, Dave Catching, mixed by Mathias Schneeburger and Red Huxley and mastered in Los Angeles. RED HUXLEY describes the album as some big rock songs, some more chilled bluesy sounding songs, guitar solos, big drums, some stories about good times, some about crazy girls and love, the works. They made a conscious decision to make each song sound different so the album stays interesting from start to finish. The band celebrated the release of NOTHING MORE with a natiowide tour in November and December 2013.
NOTHING MORE Press Quotes:
"Red Huxley's new release is bluesy, raw and honest, good ol' fashioned rock. It is packed with personality and flavour, and the track 'Up In Smoke' is undoubtedly one of the best South African singles of 2013. In all honesty, it came out of left field for me and I didn't expect this album to be as good as it is. Don't close the books on 2013 just yet, this is a local release that deserves your attention." - Bret Dugmore, Editor of Music Review.
"With their debut album Red Huxley show off their incredible talent as musicians. Great production with very raw sound. I have a feeling this is only the beginning of something big in the South African rock scene." - Jean Jordaan, MK.
“Anyone who can sweet talk their way from Cape Town into Eagles Of Death Metal guitarist Dave Catching’s Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California to record their debut is deserving of attention. Luckily, Red Huxley happen to make awesome dirty blues tinged rock too.” - Guinevere Davies, Grazia Magazine.
"This band clearly takes their brand of bluesy rock seriously, and so should you." - Murray Walker, Editor of What’s On.
