Mainstream media recently highlighted the pitfalls of the GMO seed industry led by Monsanto, DuPont, Dow and Syngenta. What has come to light is that these genetically modified seeds, with their accompanying herbicides which are designed to repel insects and kill weeds, is extremely worrying.
Apart from very little research being conducted into the effects of eating GM foods, research has further shown that even stronger strains of highly resistant weeds and superbugs, impervious to these herbicides, have proliferated.
A study undertaken by Food & Water Watch concludes that 20 years after the introduction of genetically engineered crops and their inter-dependent pesticides, a weed crisis is being fuelled.
The over-reliance on Roundup (glyphosate) has caused farmers to revert to the use of 2,4-D to kill the herbicide-resistant weeds. Super insects are now also impervious to the glyphosate. 80% of the maize seed market and 70% of the soy market is now firmly controlled by the companies mentioned above.
With the strategic implementation of GM seeds, we now have a much bigger problem on our hands; superbugs, superweeds and food that has a negative impact on health. It forms an interesting acronym when the GMO letters are reversed.
