President’s message A hero’s story always has a few key elements. There’s the ordinary life, interrupted by the challenge or adventure. There’s the call to action, the pit of despair, the rise, the climax of conflict, and the victorious resolution. But the most commonly overlooked piece of any hero’s journey is the mentor. The word itself has roots in the most infamous hero’s journey, the Odyssey. Athena takes the form of Mentor in the story to share advise with Telamachus. From then on, we find mentors in our most beloved epic tales. Luke Skywalker has Yoda. Harry Potter has Dumbledore. Batman has Alfred. Successfully taking on problems has never been a solo act. Greatness is teased out by mentors. This month got me thinking a lot about mentorship and how I have been fortunate enough to have impactful mentors for most of my personal and professional life. A good mentor can be a great sounding board, devil’s advocate, or a voice of experience – depending on what the situation demands. Youth Service is the engagement of young people in organized activity that contributes to the local, national or world community. As we promote social change through our different Clubs, it’s important for us to partake of the different mentorship opportunities. Fortunately, all Rotaract Clubs have sponsoring Clubs. Let’s look out for 1 or 2 members in these Clubs that we can learn from. When you create relationships with intelligent, credible and inspirational people, the potential for personal and professional success grows exponentially. To our sponsoring Club, the Rotary Club of Kololo, we thank you for standing by us as we do our share of making our communities better. You have been our support system, our friends and our mentors. We remain grateful. Joan Nairuba President 2018 - 2019 ROTAMIRROR May Issue 2019 ROTAMIRROR May Issue 2019 5 5
